Double Bass

As a double bassist, he specializes not only in classical music, but also in jazz and in historical music performance, working as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral musician with such bands like: {Oh!} Orkiestra Historyczna, Arte dei Suonatori or Holland Baroque giving concerts across the European countries and China.

Comes from Gdańsk. He began learning to play the double bass at the age of 10 in the Music School in Gdańsk-Wrzeszcz in the class of Leszek Kaufman. He is a graduate of the Music Academy in Katowice at the instrumental department (in the class of prof. Waldemar Tamowski and prof. Jan Kotula) and in jazz (bachelor degree in the class of prof. Michał Barański). He is a laureate of numerous double bass and jazz competitions: – individual distinction in the 5th National RCK PRO JAZZ Music Competition in Kołobrzeg – Grand Prix at the XVII. Review of Young Blues and Jazz Bands in Gdynia – 1st place at the 1st Blue Note Poznań Competition in Poznań – Grand Prix at the 13th Krokus Jazz Festival in Jelenia Góra – 2nd place in the 2nd National Cello and Double Bass Tournament in Warsaw – 4th place in the 2nd National Academic Competition Double bass in Łódź

He collaborated as a chamber musician in the Chamber Orchestra of Tychy AUKSO participating in many concert events, incl. performances with the project “Penderecki / Greenwood” at the Barbican Center in London at the Kinoteka Polish Film Festival, The European Culture Congress or the Opener Festival.

In September 2017, he released his debut album “Quartetto” presenting his own album material inspired by early music and contemporary jazz improvisation. He created his quartet together with Emil Miszk on trumpet, Piotr Chęcki on saxophone and Sławek Koryzno on drums. In July 2021 Michał Bąk Quartetto released a second album called „Fortress”.

For years he has been involved in numerous projects, cooperating with: Krystyna Stańko, “Jerzy Małek Group “, Adam Bałdych, Leszek Kułakowski, Leszek Możdżer, Dominik Bukowski, Wojciech Staroniewicz, Kari Sal, “Kamil Piotrowicz Quintet”, Alicja Serowik, Horeb band, Quartet ASAF, Wrocław Baroque Orchestra, Capella Cracoviensis, Gdynia Chamber Orchestra “Sinfonia Nordica”, the Baltic Opera in Gdańsk (1.5 years as the leader of the double bass group). Currently he is a member of such groups as: Orkiestra Historyczna OH !, Holland Baroque, Arte Dei Suonatori, Goldberg Baroque Ensemble, Progress Chamber Orchestra, Michał Bąk Quartetto, MILD Trio, Duet with Basia Pospieszalska, Paweł Ruszkowski – “Kamiszczi”, Agnieszka Maciaszczyk Quintet, Alicja Serowik Do SE SAJD.
